1. Pla de l’Estany
The countryside around Pla de l’Estany, near Banyoles, is one of the best places to see wide fields of rapeseed in bloom. The open landscape, small villages and quiet rural roads make it ideal for a relaxed spring drive or bike ride.
Villages such as Vilavenut, Galliners and Vilert offer particularly scenic views across the yellow fields.
2. Aiguamolls de l’Empordà
Around the wetlands of Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park, spring brings a mix of wildflowers, green meadows and bright yellow rapeseed fields.
The contrast between farmland and nature reserve makes this area especially attractive for walkers and cyclists. Spring is also a good time for birdwatching, as many migratory species pass through the wetlands.
3. Púbol and La Pera
The rural landscapes around Púbol and La Pera are among the most atmospheric in Baix Empordà. In early spring, the surrounding fields often turn yellow with rapeseed flowers.
It’s an ideal moment to combine a countryside walk with a visit to Castell Gala-Dalí in Púbol, one of the three sites of the Dalí Triangle.
4. Peratallada
The countryside around Peratallada offers some of the most characteristic landscapes of Baix Empordà. In early spring, fields around the medieval village often turn bright yellow with rapeseed flowers.
Quiet country roads and views across the surrounding farmland make this a particularly pleasant area for a short walk or a relaxed drive. The village itself, with its stone streets and the Castell de Peratallada, adds a distinctive historical backdrop to the landscape.
5. Aitona – Lleida
Although not in Empordà itself, one of the most spectacular spring landscapes in Catalunya appears near the village of Aitona, just south of Lleida. Each year between late February and March, thousands of hectares of peach and nectarine orchards burst into bloom.
The pink blossom transforms the Baix Segre valley into a vast sea of colour. The flowering season has become increasingly popular with photographers and visitors, with local initiatives such as Fruiturisme organising guided walks and activities among the orchards.
One of the best viewpoints is Tossal de Carrassumada, a small hill overlooking the valley where the blossom stretches across the surrounding farmland.
For those willing to travel a little further inland, it offers one of the most striking spring landscapes in Catalunya.
When to visit
The flowering season usually begins in March and can continue into April, depending on the weather. Because the bloom only lasts a few weeks, the exact timing varies slightly from year to year.
Why this matters
Spring on La Costa Brava is not always about festivals or busy events. Sometimes it is simply about the landscape, fields in bloom, quiet roads and the first warm light after winter.
